Family of Nations

Sat at the table with the old man I could see he wasn’t smiling
Then he turned to me and said we fought and died for nothing
We won the battle but we lost the peace
If you don’t talk to your neighbour then you can’t be misunderstood
There’s more violence in the household than in any place I know
Family of nations, family of nations

Turned my back on the old man, he was ranting like a maniac
Out of time and out of touch, I didn’t think he meant it
It’s a good thing, this shrinking world
If we learn from one another then we’ll have no cause to fight
Am I nave or optimistic, change don’t happen overnight
Family of nations, family of nations

Gotta gimme some room to breathe
Don’t push your way of life on me

Looked once more at the old man and then I started thinking
Maybe he did have a point and I began to listen
Deep in my memory something I once read
People seldom murder strangers but kill someone that they know
Gripped with terror I remember the phrase the old man used
Family of nations, family of nations
Gotta gimme some room to breathe
Don’t push your way of life on me
